At least 22 people were killed as Bangladeshi police fought pitch battles with tens of thousands of hardline Islamists in the capital Dhaka, police and medical officials said Monday.

Dhaka police spokesman Masudur Rahman said police used sound grenades, water cannon, tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse at least 70,000 Islamists who were camped at a key commercial district in a push for a new blasphemy law.

"We were forced to act after they unlawfully continued their gathering at Motijheel. They attacked us with bricks, stones, rods and bamboo sticks," he told AFP, adding that the protesters had dispersed early Monday morning.

Police inspector Mozammel Haq at Dhaka Medical College Hospital told AFP 11 bodies were taken to the clinic including several who were hit by bullets and a policeman who had been hacked in the head by protesters with machetes.

Eleven other bodies were taken to three clinics including four at Al Baraka and seven at two branches of Islami Bank hospitals which are based close to the trouble spots.

Hospital officials said hundreds of people were injured.

The violence erupted Sunday afternoon and continued through until the early hours of Monday morning.

It came after hundreds of thousands of Islamists demanding a new blasphemy law on Sunday blocked highways and fought running battles with police, leaving 10 people dead and hundreds injured in the Bangladeshi capital.

Chanting "Allahu Akbar!" ("God is greatest!") and "One point, One demand: Atheists must be hanged", activists from the hardline Hefajat-e-Islam marched along at least six highways, blocking transport between Dhaka and other cities.

Police said about 200,000 people had marched to central Dhaka, where fierce clashes erupted between thousands of rock-throwing protesters and security officials, with police beating back demonstrators with batons.

Syrian opposition fighters have shot down a Syrian Army helicopter in the country's east side on Monday. (AFP)

Syrian opposition fighters have shot down a military helicopter in the country's east, killing eight government troops on board, activists said on Monday.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights posted an online video showing several armed men standing in front of the wreckage. One of the fighters in the footage says it's a helicopter that the rebels shot down late Sunday in the eastern province of Deir el-Zour, along Syria's border with Iraq.

As the man speaks, the camera shifts to a pickup truck piled with bodies. The fighter is then heard saying that all of President Bashar al-Assad's troops who were aboard the helicopter were killed in the downing, according to the Associated Press.

The Observatory, which relies on a network of activists on the ground, says eight troops were killed.

The news came after violence in Syria reached new heights on Sunday

Syria's residents were startled by heavy blasts that shook Damascus early Sunday when Israeli warplanes targeted a military research center in the capital's suburbs, Syrian state television reported.

The TV reported the explosions that rocked Jamraya were caused by an Israeli missile strike on the research center that took place at 1:56 a.m. local time.

"Everything was quiet and suddenly we saw this bright orange light in the sky followed by a very loud explosion," said Tarek Hillnawi, a Damascus resident who was sitting on his balcony chatting with his friends when the blast occurred."I felt that it was over for us, that all of Damascus is set on fire."

According to Reuters, a western intelligence source said on Sunday that the overnight attack targeted a missile shipment that was "in transit" from Iran to Hezbollah.

An hour following the large blast, Al Samaa Syrian TV released a photo allegedly showing the moment the Syrian army launched an attack targeting an Israeli warplane. Unconfirmed news circulated that the Syrian army took down an Israeli jet.

At least 40 blasts were heard across the capital following the alleged Israeli attack, which according to activists, targeted the Syrian government's security forces sites in Damascus, including the Maher al-Assad Fourth Division Military Group and the weapon depot of the Syrian Republican Guard in Jamraya. Syrian state media denied these attacks.

One wounded as shots fired around Egyptian PM’s motorcade

Bodyguards opened fire at a car carrying five people that had cut into the official convoy. (AFP)

One man was wounded in a firefight between the security detail of Egyptian Prime Minister Hisham Qandil and alleged thugs Sunday but the security service said the incident was not political in nature.

Bodyguards opened fire at a car carrying five people that had cut into the official convoy as it crossed the capital's October 6 Bridge across the Nile.

The fire was returned from the car before the driver and the passengers were arrested.

A security official said the suspects claimed they had been unaware of Qandil's presence in the motorcade and had not shot at his car.

The injured man was an unsuspecting motorist.

Egyptian media reported in February that protesters threw stones and bottles at the prime minister's motorcade as he tried to enter Cairo's Tahrir Square after overnight clashes nearby and at the presidential palace.

His office said in a statement later, without elaborating, that he had been "confronted by youths and troublemakers".
