Homs deals with aftermath of Syria unrest

The city of Homs in central Syria's Homes Governorate is dealing with the aftermath of the country's unrest in 2012 when the city once became the central battlefield for Syrian government forces and the opposition.

Buildings including residential complex and mosques in Homs were ruined. Debris spread along distorted streets. Walls were turned into hives by bullets. The Syrian third largest city was severely wounded by the war.

Thus far, Syrian government forces have reportedly taken control of Homs, and some residents could be seen back to their hometown to start life over.

However, reports said although the government has taken large part of Homes Governorate, forces of the opposition still widely exist in the governorate's districts of al-Qusayr, and Ar-Rastan. Even in the central area of Homs, sporadic conflicts are still telling people that this is not the end.

Areas around one of Homs' landmarks New Clock Tower was once the city's business hub. But now the place is muted.

In a small area not far away from the tower, residents supporting the Syrian government are living a relatively normal life as the warfare didn't penetrate the place. But the people here either can't steer clear of the influence brought by the unrest.

"Prices are soaring because transport linking the city's districts is affected by the conflicts," said a resident in Homs, adding that "the power supply here is limited. For example, every five hours of power supply is followed by two or three hours of power cut."

A number of residents said they had never expected their hometown would be the central battlefield of this unrest. As for the subject, Homes' Governor Ahmad Moneir Mohammed said: "There are many Syrian sanctions inside Homes... And this governorate is on the border with Lebanon where the salafi trend is active."

The governor also said they have started the reconstruction work in this region, which according to the current situation might take years.
